What are
Digital Dental Implants?Digital Dental
Implant Surgery -
For Greater Ease,
Comfort, and Safety
Through advancements in digital technology, our daily lives have never been more convenient. Dentistry is no exception. Thanks to recent developments in digital technology, the speed, accuracy, and safety of your dental treatments have reached spectacular new heights.
Digital dental implant surgery uses a 3D CT scan to generate a simulation of the placement of the implants. This simulation is then used to produce a surgical template using CAD/CAM technology, so your teeth can be implanted in the exact same spots as the simulation.
Through this method, the safety and accuracy of the implant treatment is dramatically increased. Additionally, the length of the surgery is significantly reduced, easing the burden on the patient.
What's more, if the supporting bone is in good enough condition, there is no need to cut into the gums. It's even possible to place the implant and attach a temporary tooth to it that same day.
At our clinic, we conduct all of our implant treatments using digital implantation, so that our patients can experience as much ease and comfort as possible for their treatment.

Digital Implants Make It Possible
to Provide Safety
and Peace of Mind
to All Our Patients.
In the past few years, digital technology has truly developed at an incredible pace. Until very recently, it was most common for dental surgeons to perform implant surgery freehanded, relying solely on their experience and intuition to decide the placement and orientation of an implant. I suspect there are dentists who still today perform freehand implantation, without the use of surgical templates.
Simply drawing a single straight line freehanded can be an unexpectedly difficult task. But with a ruler, it becomes so simple that anybody can make the same beautiful line every time.
Surgical templates are the rulers we use to perform digital dental implantations.
By using surgical templates and drilling in the proper order, any dentist can successfully place the implant in its proper position, regardless of how many years of experience they have.
This technology allows us to place the implant to place the implant in the exact expected position, dramatically increasing the safety and accuracy of implant surgery.
Digital implants provide peace of mind that can only be achieved through the technological developments of the modern age. That's why we offer it to all of our patients seeking implant treatment at our clinic.

How much do you
know
about
dental implants?Implants are on nearly even footing
with natural teeth in terms of beauty and utility.
How much do you know about them?
- ①Crown
- This is the artificial tooth of the implant. It's attached to the top of the abutment via a screw, and held in place with adhesive.
They can be made from metal, resin, ceramics, or zirconia.
They are designed to be removable, so it's possible to replace with a new one if any problems arise.
- ②Abutment
- This part connects the crown to the implant. They're made from titanium or ceramics. It serves as the foundation for the artificial tooth, and serves to catch the biting force of the tooth.

- ③Implant
(Artificial Root) - This is the implant itself. It is also called implant post, fixture, screw, or artificial root. It's shaped like a screw and made of titanium. Titanium bonds firmly to the jaw, so once implanted it is securely rooted to the jaw, ensuring it can support the patient's biting force for a long time. They are durable enough to resist all but the most extreme forces without breaking. They come in various sizes, allowing us to select the most suitable size for the implant location, as well as most suitable for the patient's jaw bone. Recent years have seen continuing increases in quality, such as surface treatment that allow for greater ease of bonding to the jaw.
- ④Jaw Bone
- By securely bonding to the implant and helping it catch the force of the patient's bite, it plays a vital support role in the success of the implant treatment. Because the volume of bone is key to the success of any implantation, additional treatments to increase the amount of bone, such as bone grafting and guided bone regeneration (GBR) therapy, may be required.
The Three Major
Treatment Options
for Lost TeethDo you know
what three treatments are available
when you lose a tooth?
-
Bridges
The first treatment option is a bridge, a type of fixed dental prothesis. Bridges typically involve filing down both teeth adjacent to the lost tooth, and applying a continuous crown across all three positions. This treatment gives the appearance that no tooth was lost from the middle position. If the neighboring support teeth are both yet secure, the bridge can remain in place for a long time. However, in some cases, removal of the tooth nerves may be required. Furthermore, bridges require filing away much of these neighboring teeth, and the loss of the enamel from these teeth increases the risk of cavities, and consequently can cause these teeth to worsen as well.
Additionally, the brunt of the biting force where the tooth was lost becomes supported by these neighboring teeth, further increasing the likelihood of developing problems with them.
-
Partial Dentures
The second treatment option is partial removable dentures, or PRD. Used since long ago, the modern iterations affix an artificial tooth to a metal-based clasp that attaches to the gums and teeth, supporting the bite. If force is applied to the artificial tooth directly, however, it can lead to deformation of the gums. To prevent the dentures from sinking into the gums, the bite force is spread out across the neighboring teeth.
Just as with bridges, this places a large burden on the remaining teeth in that area, which can lead to the loss of additional teeth.
Difficulties chewing, as well as aversion toward the appearance or sensation of partial dentures are not uncommon drawbacks for PRD. However, they can be created in fairly little time and can used to replace any number of lost teeth, so they can be suitable for a wide variety of cases.
-
Implants
The third treatment option is an implant. This treatment involves implanting an artificial root made of titanium into the bone where the tooth was lost, and then affixing an artificial tooth to it with a screw. Because the bite force for implants is supported by the bone, there is no additional burden placed upon other teeth. This can be said to be the best method to preserve your remaining natural teeth. Implants are unique as a treatment option, as they solve this issue of undue burden on neighboring teeth, as well as the other problems inherent to bridges and partial dentures.
Furthermore, implants hold the highest longevity of these three treatment options, with most cases lasting for 20 years following treatment. However, one drawback of implants is that they require minor surgery. Additionally, they are not covered by Japanese National Health Insurance and potentially quite expensive, and also require a comparatively longer period of time to complete the treatment.
Comparing
The Three
TreatmentsLet's take a closer look at
the three treatment options.
Bridges | Partial Removeable Dentures | Implants | |
---|---|---|---|
Longevity of the Treatment |
7~8Years | 5~6Years | 15Years or More |
Effects on |
Requires removal of significant levels of enamel. Some cases may require removing nerves. |
The teeth that will support the clasp will need to be filed or shaved slightly. |
There is no reshaping of the neighboring teeth. |
Bite Force |
Bite force quotient equal to approx. 60% of a natural tooth. However, due to the bite force being supported by the surviving adjacent teeth, it becomes easier for these teeth to develop additional problems. |
Bite force quotient equal to approx. 30% of a natural tooth. However, due to the bite force being spread across the surviving neighboring teeth, it becomes easier for nearby teeth to develop additional problems. |
Bite force quotient equal to approx. 90% of a natural tooth. As the bite force is supported by the implant itself, there is no excess burden placed upon the neighboring teeth. |
Aesthetic Appeal |
It is possible to affix a bridge made of ceramics, providing a highly natural-like aesthetic. (Ceramics are not covered by insurance.) |
The clasp that is affixed to the surviving teeth for support must be made of metal, which may have an undesirable appearance. |
As the artificial tooth for an implant is intended to be made from ceramic, the appearance will be nearly the same as that of a natural tooth. |
Cost |
132,000yen~ This is the price per tooth for one zirconia crown. The price may change depending on the number of teeth. |
220,000yen~ This is the estimated cost for PRD treatments not covered by insurance. |
352,000yen~ The price may vary depending on the treatment prognosis. |
Treatment Period |
1~2Months | ~1Month | 5~9Months |

But today, it's possible to simulate the implantation before the surgery itself and create a surgical template for each patient that guarantees the implant goes in that exact spot. At Smile Plan, we provide safer, more precise implant treatments by using custom surgical templates for every patient.

The Course of
Your Implant TreatmentLet's take a look at
a typical dental implant treatment
from start to finish.
-
- STEP1 Preliminary Examination
- With digital dental implants, generating a surgery simulation beforehand is a vital first step. Before the actual surgery, we collect as much information as possible to provide a more accurate diagnosis. This process includes: a medical questionnaire, a dental impression, x-rays, CT scans, as well as photographs of your mouth and face.
-
- STEP2 Treatment Plan・
Surgery Simulation - With the materials we've collected, we'll formulate a custom treatment plan for you. This plan not only takes into account the implant treatment itself, but also the health of your other teeth and gums, as well as your bite. The CT data is used to create a simulation of the implant surgery that more accurately represents the volume and density of your bones, as well as account for any effects to your other teeth and gums. This in turn allows us to optimize the treatment and surgery to your specific care.
- STEP2 Treatment Plan・
-
- STEP3 Consultation
- In order to assuage any and all concerns you might have, we will fully layout and explain the treatment plan to you before proceeding any further. We encourage you to let us hear all of your questions and worries regarding treatment, as well as ask for any clarification on points you are unsure about.
-
- STEP4 Surgical Template
Production - CWe'll send the data from the simulation we generated using the CT scans to our partner digital dental laboratory, Co.lab. There, they'll use the latest digital dental technology to craft the surgical template for your implant surgery.
※Please Note: Different types of surgical templates exist to better accommodate broken and/or missing teeth, the chosen manner of surgery, and so on. As such, there will be some variances in the price of the surgical template, as well as its production time. We appreciate your understanding.
- STEP4 Surgical Template
-
- STEP5 Implant Surgery
- We will perform the implant surgery using the surgical template provided by Co.lab. Thanks to the simulation generated beforehand, the surgery can be carried out safely, accurately, and in the shortest amount of time possible. Those with sufficient enough bone volume available can also have a temporary tooth attached the same day they receive the dental implant surgery.
-
- STEP6 Artificial Tooth
Affixation - After the implantation, you'll need about 3-6 months for recovery. During that time, we'll perform optical scans to create the artificial tooth that will eventually be attached to the implant. Once this tooth is manufactured and affixed to your implant, your treatment will be complete. After completed treatment, we will have you undergo regular maintenance to your implant once every three months to protect its longevity and functionality.

Born in Osaka in 1973, Dr. Yamamoto aspired to put the dexterity he inherited from his grandmother, an artisan, to good use. He set his sights on dentistry, a profession that would not only allow him to make the most of these skills, but to also build many relationships with the people around him. After graduating from the Osaka University Department of Dentistry in 1999, he began tackling ways to improve dentures. At that time, many dentists had reservations about the efficacy of implant treatments, so he began this research to find safer treatment methods for artificial teeth.
While treating his father's teeth, however, Dr. Yamamoto came to feel that dentures could not provide adequate protection to the remaining teeth, and changed course to focus his research on implant treatments. He studied implants abroad throughout Asia, as well as in Europe and the U.S., and came to truly acquire implant treatment expertise after a long-term course on implant treatments at New York University. Furthermore, despite the widespread use overseas, Japan was still slow to adopt precision treatment methods using dental microscopes. Recognizing this, Dr. Yamamoto has made great strides in introducing these precision treatment methods whenever possible, working tirelessly to increase the accuracy and safety of all dental treatments at his clinics.

Dr. Akita was born in 1980, in Ibaraki City, Osaka Prefecture. After graduating from Kyushu Dental University, he worked at a dental institute in Kyoto for three years, before starting at Smile Plan Yamamoto Dental Clinic in 2008.
While he is of course proficient in insurance-covered treatments, he specialized in techniques necessary for high level aesthetic dental treatments, such as implants, which propelled him into the role of assistant clinic director at a young age.
In 2012, he became the director of Smile Plan Sakura Dental Clinic in Takatsuki City at its opening. At present, he focuses on orthodontic treatment as well. As director, Dr. Akita has received high praise for his exacting surgical technique from his both his co-workers and his colleagues at large. Because there are many patients who are understandably afraid of dental pain, Dr. Akita endeavors to always keep treatments at his clinic pain-free and comfortable.
